Here is an case study to explain my points better:
In 2015, Bodega, a startup that aimed to sell convenience items via unmanned kiosks placed in apartment buildings and offices, faced backlash for appropriating the name and aesthetic of corner stores, which are often run by immigrant families. The branding failed to resonate with the target audience, leading to negative press and a social media storm.
As a result, Bodega rebranded to “Stockwell” and redesigned their logo and website to better reflect their mission and values. The company learned the hard way that good branding and design are crucial for a startup’s success and that a misstep in these areas can have significant consequences.
